A type of machine in the material handling industry which could be used to lift and transport loads from one location to another is called a forklift. Each and every component of a forklift has a specific function. Various parts could be used to transport the load horizontally or vertically.

Mast
The forklift mast refers to all the parts which lift and lower the load. There are different kinds of masts utilized for lifting loads to various heights: quad, simplex, duplex and triplex.

Power Supply
Forklifts have four different ways of being powered: electric, gas, propane and diesel. The battery is situated within the cab under the seat. The propane tank is on the back of the truck. The fuel tank on diesel and gas forklifts is under the back of the truck.

Cab
The forklift cab is located in the middle of the truck. This is where the operator sits and accesses all the controls and informational gauges. The gas pedal, steering wheel, lifting controls, tilting controls and brake are all located within the cab.

Frame
The truck frame carries all the largest components of the forklift, including the counterweights, that are situated at the rear so as to prevent the truck from tipping when loaded. The frame consists of the overhead guard that protects the operator. The undercarriage holds the axles, wheels and driveshaft.
